Ok, bout a week ago, I Found a 950 Ford for sale. It was one of those tractors that has been in a barn for all its life, still has all its original paint, looks wonderful, and hadent been ran in ten years. With just a little tinkering, and a good tune up, it now runs better that my new truck. Problem is, I cant find any information on it. How much horsepower does it have, how good of a machine is it, what is it worth. I paid $1000 dollars for it, but think it is worth a whole lot more than that. Next problem is, the serial number on it makes no sence. It is 44I30. What does that mean. I sure do like my new tractor, but it sure id hard to find things out about it. Thanks for all your help. Andy

You got a tractor worth more than a thousand. More if it has the optional wide front and power steering. Ford used and "I" for their ones.

Jim, thanks for your help. That is where I found the serial number. My tractor does have a narrow tricycle front end, and it even has power stearing. But my tractor does have a live PTO. Im not real worried about what the collector value is, I plan on using it to shred with and plow a rodeo arena with. Is it a good tractor to keep, or should I send it down the road and just stick with my old farmall, which I have decided is indestructable. Thanks again, Andy

Are you saying that it has a dual clutch? The Fords with live pto did it with a dual clutch where pushing the clutch pedal halfway down stopped the tractor but left the pto spinning. Pushing the clutch all the way down would also stop the pto. If pushing the clutch halfway down stops everything, then it's not "live" pto. If it really does have live pto, then your 950 has been owner-upgraded somewhere along the way. Good for you!

The 950 is a 5 speed model of the 900 series. It was introduced with the 1955 model year. I'm assuming the serial number you're looking at is stamped just below the 950 model number on a horizontal flat pad below the air cleaner. If so, that "I" is probably a 1. Ford did that a lot (use a capital "I" in place of a "1"). That being my assumption, I'll say it's a 1955. The 950 had a 5 speed trans and non-live pto. It came most commonly with a narrow dual tire tricycle front, but was also available with a wide front or a single tire tricycle. Horsepower is about 40-45. Engine is a 172 cu in overhead valve Red Tiger 4 cylinder engine. As described by you, it sounds like it's definitely worth more than you paid. However, for whatever reason the "collector" value of the 900 series has not really taken off. Not like the 8N. You can usually get a decent 900 for around $2500-$3000....about the same as an 8N, but the 900 is a whole lot more tractor. Here's a website to help with more info.
