3000 rear main leak

Can any one tell me how hard it is to replace
the rear main seal on my ford 3000 diesel ?
Also will it hurt to keep running it? thanks

Tractor has to be split behind the engine to replace the rear main seal. Once split, simply remove the clutch, flywheel, and rear plate, and it's right there.

These seals can go out for a variety of reasons, old age and heat deterioration to name a couple of them. More likely, the leak you have is coming from the rear main bearing cap side seals. There is a gasket that goes over the backside of the cap to help slow this without having to tear into the engine.

Hi David, So long as you don't mind putting oil in it, running your tractor with a leaking main seal will not cause any damage. Verify that the crankcase vent is not blocked. A leaking seal is often a symptom of a loose bearing. Low oil pressure would be another clue the bearings are worn. Good luck...Al English
