Trying to fix my overheating problem. Can bush hog for 1 1/2 hr before it goes into red. I have replaced the radiator cap, theromstat, and lower hose, drained radiator (anti-freeze was a nice green color, no sediment). Still overheats what is my next step?

I have a cracked manifold, could that be it, or the water pump. Water pump age ????

Also I can squeeze the lower hose and it doesn't seem like there is much water there. Does this mean a bad radiator? No leaks that I can see anywhere. With cap off I see a lot of vibration but not much water flow.

Bill:
If your not seeing much water flow with the cap off and the engine warmed up, check your water pump drive belt to make sure it's driving the pump. If that's OK, check the thermostat to make sure it's opening. Hope this helps.

Bill, going through exactly the same thing on my 861 right now. Mine didn't get to red, but got close enough to bother me. Running Prestone flush in it right now (probably change out this weekend). Also, thought I had the rad cleaned out good with air, but after flushing from fan side with water, then blowing again real careful I got a lot more junk from between the fins. Not sure if I'm fixed yet either...

I would take a close look at the radiator fins. Pollen, dust, weeds, bugs etc. can build up and take a lot of back flushing from the fan side to get out. I have been brush mowing for the past week and have had an extra screen over the raditor. It cleans faster but still gathers a lot of debris.

Does it over heat if not mowing? Often the front of the radiator gets so loaded with chaf that the cooling is greatly affected. A screen in front or right behind the grill will solve that problem. Also a good radiator hosing from the back side to flush out the cooling fins helps. Fred.
