4000 Generator repair vs Convert to Alternator

I have a 1975 4000 with charging problems. Symptoms as follows....

Battery drains while key is turned on (including while engine is running).
The faster the engine runs, the brighter the Charging Light on the instrument panel glows.
I need to charge the battery about twice each month (with daily use).

Is it better to repair the problem (whatever it is) or convert to an alternator?

Cheers,
Alex

Alex,

I have a Ford 5000 Diesel that has been converted over from a 12v generator to a 12v alternator. It has a 12 vdc negative ground system.

I went to O'Reiley (formally Hi-Lo) auto parts and purchased a 1977-79 GM 3-wire,12volt/63amp alternator for approx. $38.00. It works great even at low idle speed.

Only problem with this system is it that you loose your mechanical tach connection. I can live without it.

There are other aftermarket alternators that do offer the tach connection but they cost a lot more.

If you want more details on installation or wiring hookup, contact me by email and I will send a drawing to you.

Goodluck,

Charlie
