I was at a tractor show in southern Alberta a couple of weekends ago (Ford was the featured brand) and somebody had a late 50's (I think) Ford 900 select-o-speed diesel that was bronze in color. Never seen one of those before, was that a regular color then or was it some sort of a special edition, or maybe somebody who just liked the color? Lovely looking tractor that's for sure and a great restoration job.

In 1959 Ford introduced the Select-O-Speed transmission on their tractors. As a publicity stunt, they forced each dealer to order 1 gold SOS tractor to use as a demonstrator. The dealer could order his gold demonstrator in whatever model he chose. I've seen numbers indicating there were about 2300 Ford tractor dealers in 1959, therefore about 2300 gold SOS demonstrators were built. Some estimates I've seen indicate there may only be a couple hundred left in operating condition. Once in awhile one surfaces with blue and gray paint on it. Apparently some dealers painted them gray and red or gray and blue before selling them once their usefulness as a demonstrator was over. Now they are becoming prized collectible tractors. Caution! A gold Ford SOS is rather easy to counterfeit so do more research and be careful before you pay big bucks for one.
