Just bought this tractor, 4 cyl gas, 5 speed trans, live pto, hydraulics, power steering. Haven't got a manual yet but want to change fluids and play now! Probably dumb question(s) but here goes:

1. I drained the trans reservoir, and filled with 134D(took about 6-7 gallons and overflowed). Will it hurt to overfill the trans cavity? Ford NewHolland said tractor would take about 8 gallons, and I thought the hydraulics and trans reservoirs were same cavity, and overfilled (to top)? Also, is there a dipstick for this reservoir?
2. Drained and Filled hyd. reservoir (maybe 2-3 gallon) till shows on dipsticks. Does this fluid also lube the differential(rear end pig), or did I miss a pipe plug and fill cap for the diff?
3. I drained, cleaned and replaced p/s fluid filter, and filled with 134d also, is this ok for the p/s?

Any help appreciated, thanks, Mark

hi Mark,
The original service manual for your tractor calls for SAE 80 in the 4-speed, 5-speed and differential. Archive posts by knowledgeable people state that NH134D has been specifed by FNH for many years.

Mark,

Please note that this tractor has three reservoirs: Transmission, hydraulics and differential. I use 134D in all three.

(Mine is a row crop, so it also has two final drives, also. I use 80W in the finals.)

hi Mark,
The 5-speed takes 8 quarts, not 8 gallons, of 80 weight. Dunno about NH 134D in the trans--it's a lot thinner. Differential takes 80 weight, also. You're ok on the hydraulics and power steering. The differential casting is separated into the 'center' housing for the hydraulics, and the 'differential' housing.

With the trans plumb full, oil'll probly squirt out everwhere. Blow the seals, too.
regards, George

You really shouldn't overfill the transmission. Drain it down using the level plug on the right side of the transmission (down by the running board). The fill cap for the hydraulics is on the left side under the seat; you should have a dip stick for that. The differential fill cap is behind the seat and to the right of center; the drain plug is the furthest back of the 3 behind the engine; the level plug is on the left side near the rear of the differential. The 134D oil is OK for the power steering.

Dave,

Thanks for the info. Will drain trans to proper level and drain and fill diff. Didnt know there were level plugs on sides of diff and trans. Since the reservoirs are seperate, what do you think about using 80/90 weight in diff and trans, instead of 134d?

You can use 80w/90 in the differential and transmission, if you want. If the seals are good then the fluids won't mix, otherwise you won't be happy. Also, you already filled the transmission and I don't think there is anything wrong with using the 134D in it.
