4000 high RPM at start - then settles

I recently bought a 1963 FORD 4000, 4 cyl diesel. When starting, the engine revs up and almost pegs the tachometer for about 3 seconds then settles to a good idle and throttle response. Is this high RPM normal? Thanks in advance for your comments.

TY -> My model and serial numbers are located on the left side of my 4000 on a flat (horizontal to the ground) piece below the battery holder. It is about the same height as the top of the starter, so, if you place your hand on top of the starter and move your hand under the battery holder, your hand should be resting on this flat piece that has your numbers on it. This piece also has two large bolt holes on the side of it. I had to sand some old paint/rust away to be able to read my numbers. Also, these numbers are punched, not cast into the metal. Hope this helps.

I don't have any information for you on the high RPM's issue you are having. I'm wondering if you would be able to give me some info..

I too have a '63 or '64 4000 4cyl. diesel, only I can't find the model & s/n. I have heard both left and right sides of the transmission bell housing, but I can't find on either side. Can I ask you where this information is located on your tractor?

TY -> I'm not sure if you saw my response:

no.. this is NOT normal.. sounds like a "govenor problem" in the injector pump.. where there is binding on the gov ring and it cant properly return to idle unless its spinning..

it is normal for the pump to go the the full position when the tractor is cut of... it is NOT normal for it to hang there for 3 seconds.. it should Imediatly go back to idle or where ever the throttle lever is set after the engine starts..

run a can of bg 44k through the tractor and work it to clean up the pump.. after a full tank of diesel... see if that will clean it up.. but most likly something bigger is in the governor area.. too big to be disvolved or cleaned out... but sometimes you can clean out the gunk and fix it.. good luck.. bill
