I'm getting ready to change out the radiator on my 1963 Ford 4000, 4 cyl diesel. Does anyone have any advice or tips on this job? I've never removed the engine cover or the radiator before. I kind of figure there are some helpful folks out there that have done this before and would offer some good advice. Thanks in advance.

Bill, Something else to consider, depending on the condition of the engine and possible compression check. You may consider the cost of gaskets to pull the head to check and possibly R&R components.

Bill, If you have time to run a radiator flush ahead of time it will allow you to bull a block drain plug and rig in a hose fitting to power flush the sludge and sediment from the block.

If you have a pressure washer this would be a good time to clean it, address any leaks you can identify may be check out the front pivot point really good.

Hello Bill. To R&R a radiator on these old Fords isn't really all that bad. Unbolt and remove the hood, drain the coolant, disconnect the hoses and unbolt the radiator. I've always removed the sheetmetal in one chunk (helps to have an assistant to lift it off and on) by unbolting it from the instrument panel and center rear panel then removing the two bolts (one each side) at the bottom of the front side panels. Sometimes it helps to remove the grille. The radiator is bolted to the front axle support with two carriage bolts. On occasion I've had a carriage bolt spin in the radiator mounting flange. About all you can do in that case is torch off the nuts. Other than that, it's pretty straightforward. Hope that helps...
