Cyl. #3,4 are wet with oil, exhaust mists oil; apparent badly leaking value guides. (compression checks good.)
1) might it be another problem?
2) can guides be rem/replaced without special tooling?
Any other thoughts, suggestions before I attempt repair?

The valve guides in these engines are simply driven into the head so are fairly easy to replace. It's best to use a piloted driver but could probably be done with "other tools" (such as a modified punch?). The new guides need to be installed to the same height above the head as the old ones so I'd measure the heights prior to removal. Also, you should have the valves and seats ground once the new guides are in because they could alter the angle of the valve stem slightly. Having said that, if your exhaust is misting oil when the tractor runs it sounds like a more serious problem than valve guides. More like broken rings or a burnt piston. Generally, bad guides will cause a little smoke at start-up and then clears up. If you're fouling plugs with oil, or having blue smoke with engine running at operating temperature, I'd say it's rings and/or piston related.
