Everyone who has responded so far is correct. Here's a site (hopefully) that may help.

The series is 01. The middle digit designates the model within the series.
The 861, for instance, has a 5 speed trans and live pto. An 841 has a 4 speed trans and trans driven pto. Go to the Vintage Ford Tractor resource page and it will give you all the information you need and then some.

Hi avery, 801 is a SERIES designation. The 61 is a MODEL identification. So the tractor is a series 801, model 861. Hope this makes sense...Al English

Or to say it another way, the first digit is the series number, the second digit represents the features, and the third number is it's age.

So there are 600, 800, & 900 series tractors or 601, 801, & 901 series tractors that are a little newer.

Then the 861 would identify it as a:

8 - 800/801 size tractor

6 - with power steering, 5-speed tranny, live pto

1 - the newer xx1 series

My 861 does not have power steering. My 961 does. I think power steering was an option you could get on any model in either series
