I have a guy who has a 172 (he says) short block industrial engine. I've seen iit but I did not get serial # or casting #.Can one tell from casting # if it is a 172 and year? It is complete with block, crank, pistons, rods, cam and cam gears. No head, no oil pan. Block has been rebuilt to .020 over. It's all bolted up. Someone over torqued a couple of the head bolts and stripped out two or three of the threads in the block. He wants $200 for the block. I have a Jubilee which I would put it in if it fits with Jubilee head and oil pan. Part #'s are same but longer (7 digit) part #'s are slightly different. Question: will a Jubilee head and oil pan fit 172 block? and what is best way to fix stripped headbolt holes? Your expert appraisals are anxiously awaited. Thanks. BW

Your cylinder head and pan will both physically bolt onto the 172" block. The problem is that the combustion chambers are different shapes and sizes so I wouldn't recommend going that way.

Hi Bill The resident guru around here is Tony Jacobs, if you use the search feature I think you can find his phone number, he can tell you what you need to know as far as casting numbers etc.Good Luck
