I own a 3cyl 4000 diesel and was just looking for some opinions about the aboved subjects.
I'm also in the process in purchasing a smaller tractor, maybe an 8N, 2000 or 3000. I'm very undecided and would also like some opinions on their performance and dependability.

I have had both the 3 & 4 cylinder gas models and I can honestlyh say that if the 3 cylinder gas is the bottom of the list then you have no issues with any of them. My little 2000 will pull its guts out and fire every time you hit the starter.

Corey, I basicly agree with Rick. If you live where there is lots of WINTER, I would go for the gas model. I have a 4000 Diesel, a little hard to start under 30 deg's, under 20 deg's it don't wont to start at all. , Odtherwise I love the tractor, lots of power, and cheap to run..When it gets COLD I go to the gas tractor... I also have a 4000 3 cyl. diesel, but it starts up quite easily during our Spokane, WA winters. The difference is a lower radiator hose heater. I plug it in the night before I want to use the tractor.

If I was offered identical chassis with my choice of the 4 engines, I would pick them this way.
1] 3cyl Diesel 2] 4cyl Gas 3] 4 cyl Diesel 4] 3cyl Gas
My $.02, worth what you paid.
