I would like to replace the fenders on my '56 640 (serial number 86000). I would assume that I have the original script fenders. They are eat up with cancer. These fenders are different than those pictured on a recent post concerning 800 fenders. They have a "hoop" style bracket, do not have the bar across like an 8N fender does, and do not have the kidney shaped indention of the 601 fender. How many years was this fender style produced? Does anyone know of a source for replacements (scripted or unscripted) If I try to fix these, they will be more Bondo than metal.

When you say "hoop" style bracket I'm assuming you're talking about the flat stock loop that runs around the perimeter of the inside of the fender. I thought that style was only in '55, but it's possible I'm wrong and that it was carried over into part of '56. Based on other tractors I've seen, I feel confident that the bracket support system change occurred sometime in '56.

At any rate, the fender skin is the same shape and size for 1955, 56 and 57. If you can find fenders that look like yours they should fit and look fine on your 640 regardless of the support bracket. I don't know of any aftermarket reproductions available for that particular fender. The later "kidney" indentation fender is available and commonly sold as replacement for all Ford tractors from '55 on. Maybe someday the bigger fenders will become available as repops.

I saw a pair of really nice '55 fenders sell on ebay recently for over $300. They had been removed from the tractor when it was almost new so a loader could be installed. Then they spent the next 48 years in a shed before being sold on ebay. I decided at that price, my fenders were "good enough"!
