I'm in western Ohio and am looking at a tractor on a JD lot.It has 18.4-38 radial tires that have very little wear. Apparently a past owner had trouble keeping the rear wheels in place on the axle..... both rears had blocks welded to the axle in order to keep the wheel from sliding on the axle. Mechanically , everything else looked good considering the age of the tractor. The other thing that concerns me is that it only has 1000 rpm pto. I need 540. Does anyone know if it can be switched over easily? The dealer says 5500 is his bottom $. The hour meter is broken. The sheet metal is straight but has some surface rust. I would appreciate any thoughts that you might share. Thank you for your time.

Sorry, I transposed the# . It is a 8700. Yes it does have a snap ring around the 1000 pto. I spoke with a service manager at a Ford NH dealership and he "thought" the shaft could be changed by removing the 1000 and inserting a 540 BUT he wasn't sure. That's why I've come to this forum for answers and opinions from farmers like me. I've used the YT forum on MM, this is my first time with Fords.Thank you.

Can't promise you if it's 540/1000 because I'm not really familiar with those models, but I do know that is how the 4 cylinder tractors are set up. The 4 cylinders had 2 stubs, and you just change them. This is probably the same. Some newer tractors now have reversible shafts, just pull them out and turn end for end. I know that replacement shafts are expensive, as I priced one for my 7710 a few years ago. Just about $600 Cad at that time. Needless to say, I looked hard and found the old one. I don't know much abour bar axles either, but what you describe concerns me a bit. What was done to it, that would require doing something like that? Otherwise, the price sounds OK, provided the tractor is in good working order. If nobody else posts some info on the PTO, then I can probably dig up some info. Take care.

Just looked up the PTO today. 540/1000 has two shafts. Take one stub out, and swap the other in. In my neck of the woods, a 540 shaft runs about 290 Cad, so that's a bit over 200 to you folks down south. Take care.

Thanks Rod. I have been dickering with the dealer all week and I'm going to see him Sat. a.m. and try to work out a deal. We did find the 540 pto shaft, buried in the tool box, under the floor of the cab ! Being new to Ford that did seem to be a strange place for a tool box. This Ford discussion site seems to be quite active and helpful..... . thank you all very much .

Hi Tom,
Are you talking about a Ford? I assume by the price, you don't mean a Deere. I'm not aware that ford made a 7800. They did make a 7810. The 7810 was a tractor with a 4 cylinder chassis, from a 7610, and fitted with a derated 6 cyl engine from a TW-10, and rated at 86 PTO HP. They generally fetch a higher price than that. They had flange axles, and 540/1000 PTO. Just change the stub. I'm not aware that bar axles were available on the 7810. So, I wonder if it's not an 8700. That would give the bar axles, and the 1000 PTO. On an 8700, I am pretty sure you could get 540, so it would be a matter of going to the boneyard and getting the guts from another tractor with 540. I'm not real familiar with them, but I think it is possible that they had 540/1000, and all that is required is a different stub. Just check and see if it has a circlip holding the shaft in. If it is a 7800, then I would guess that is some conversion or another, probably fitted with a 2700 series Ford truck engine. That just made it worth a lot less in my book. That runs through some of the possibilities...Just check it over well. Good luck.

Rod
