I am looking at a Ford 3000 diesel nad have noted the folowing.

Motor smokes very bad when racing it up, but not smoke when running at the same speed.

When the drift lever is ingaged the lift will not work, but works without it.

The tractor does not have "power steering"

Thanks for responding

Al, considering the problems my 3000 had when I bought it yours sounds like a dream machine if the price is right. I think it's pretty common for a diesel engine to blow black smoke under load. I wouldn't automatically be worried about that. By drift lever I figure you mean draft control. If the 3 pt works while in the position control I also think that's fine. If it's not it means a lift cover repair which isn't all that hard or expensive. Not having power steering isn't necessarily a deal killer either unless it is that important to you. I don't think it's practical to add it later. But having it sure is fine. I don't have a good feel for the price on 3000's. I paid $2500.00 for my 72. It looked ready for the junk yard, dry rotted truck tires on the front and had no steering at all. Filters were full of sludge, hydraulic fluid that looked like bearing grease, coffee colored transmission fluid. Going down the road it would, on its own volition, just turn 90 degrees in one direction or the other. You get the idea. The only thing it would do reliably is crank and blow black smoke under load. It did have all of the optional factory gizmos. I put about $1500.00 in it in parts mostly power steering repair and painted it. I did all of the repairs except rebuilding the hydraulic pump and I ain't no mechanic. It looks and operates close to new now. In fact, the previous owner who was chuckling when I picked it up has now offered twice what I paid to get it back. I think the 3000 is a good stout medium duty tractor fairly straight forward to work on if you have the manuals. Beats an 8N hands down. I haven't ask for a single part that was not available through my New Holland dealer. In addition, you'll get tons of expert help on this board. All 3000's are at least 29 years old now. Most will have several thousand engine hours and will look rough. I'd look past that for a good, sound engine. I was looking for a project tractor when I bought mine and probably got beat, but I wouldn't pay as much as $5000.00 for one in near perfect condition. I've never seen another one for $2500.00 and have seen them advertised as high as $6300.00 to as low as $3800.00 in our area.

What year is it, what price. I bought a '74 2000 diesel a couple of years ago for $2500, but it had problems. But price is only part of the story. In my opinion, I would take a pass if: it were not an 8 speed, if it did not have power steering, if it were not a 3 cylinder, if all of the instruments did not work on the panel (if all the insturments aren't working, you can't tell if it's charging, has low oil pressure or..... ).

blowing black smoke when you gun a diesel is GOOD!!!!

blowing white smoke is bad unless its very cold and just started..

after the engine gains speeds a levels out. there should be no smoke..

if the tractor is pulling a very heavy load,, there will be a little smoke..

it the tractor is blowing lots of black smoke underload,, its over loaded.. pick a lower gear.. or less load..

blowing black smoke with you "gun it" simply means the injector pump is in good shape and is "pouring the fuel" into the engine.. but the engine has not yet sped up to use that fuel.. this is normal and healthy.. in as much as the fuel system is good... and the injectors are clean..

blowing white smoke is either buring oil or imcomplete combustion due to being cold or due to low comression... so white smoke on a warm engine is a sign of oil burning or bad compression..

of course this applies to diesel engines...but ironically mostly true for gas engines but black smoke in gas mean flooding.. and is not good..
but white smoke means burning oil in gas engines...

all older engines will do a "white puff" when they first start.. for even 5 to 15 seconds.. this can be due to valve guide wear.. which in common but not necessary a problem...

good luck.. bill
