960 hydraulic and pto questions

My 960 has a live PTO. The clutch pedal controls both clutches. Halfway down on the pedal disengages the wheel clutch, and all the way down disengages the pto clutch. It does not seem that the pto clutch disengages all the way. When there is nothing attached to the pto, no problem engaging the shaft. When the brush hog is on the pto, there is significant grinding when trying to engage the pto (obviously the driven shaft is still turning). Is it normal to get a little grinding? The manual describes the clutch adjustment. It calls for 0.75" freeplay at the pedal "...before you start to feel pressure". My tractor is almost 50 years old, the pedal bushing and linkage have a lot of free play all by themselves. What does the manual mean by "...start to feel pressure..."? Do they mean that you can start to feel the bearing push in the forks? It seems like the wheel clutch engages really "high" on the pedal stroke, but even so, the pto clutch does not disengage at the very bottom. Is there adjustments on the outside that I'm missing? Does this indicate wackiness on the inside?

On to hydraulic questions. My 3 pt hitch seems to work fine. It holds the brush hog up there no problem. But 90% of the 3 pt travel happens in the last inch of lever travel. Do I have to adjust the lever itself, or is this indicative of something else?

Remote hydraulics. I don't have anything hooked to my remote hydraulic hoses at this point. But, I still get leakage from the square fittings on the tractor end of the hoses. Ther is no crush washer between the fitting and the landing on the tractor, is there supposed to be one? If not, how do you keep these fittings from leaking?

Bob , on the remote hydraulics issue I was able to install an O- ring under the locking nut and washer on these fittings. Not sure that it was designed for an O-ring but there was enough chamfer on the casting that the tight fitting O-ring on the threads of the fitting seated nicely under the washer. Never had any leaks from this point. Dan Robertson

Kinda sounds like you are ready to replace the clutches, but I'm a dummy about that so I'll not say much.

Do a search on this site for 'cam follower pin' and you will find the problem with your 3-point control. It is an internal peg that follows a groove, and wears out every 50 years or so. Need to remove the top plate & get into your rear end area.

For the leaky pipes, there are pipe fittings and there are compression (washer) fittings, and some people don't know the difference & mix & match. Don't know what you have....

Just some thoughts.

Thanks guys. I re-adjusted my clutch pedal last night, and still the same. I think that it is something inside...time for clutches.
