Bob, typicaly the N with a bad coil will run for 30-45 minutes and then shut down. If you have a bad switch, they will typicaly run for 10-20 minutes such as you describe. When it shuts down, take a jumper and jump around the switch and see if it will start. If it does, you found the problem. Good luck. Ron

Bob,
Does your carb have fuel in it when it shuts down? When it shuts down, open the drain plug on the carb and see if you have a plenty of fuel draining. It should come out like a cow peein' on a flat rock, so have a container ready to catch it.If not you may have a partial blockage in the fuel supply to the carb. It allows some fuel to flow but not enough to keep in running continuously so when the carb bowl empties, the engine stops. Check the "secret filter" in the fuel supply line at the carb inlet elbow. If that's clean, work your way back to the tank til you find the problem. You might also check the condensor in the distributor. Hope this helps.

Bob B,
Don't know why you can post here and not on the N forum.
But I've seen this question asked and answered by Dell many, many times over on the N board so I'll give it a shot.
It's a classic textbook problem with Ns.
N frontmount coils use a tarry substance to insulate the coil windings. Often when the coil starts going bad the warm coil causes the tar to get thin which diminishes the insulating effect of the tar which causes a short in the internal windings of the coil.
Runs about 10 - 20 minutes then sputters and dies.
Starts right back up if you let the tractor/coil
cool off for a time.
Bet you dollars to donuts a new coil will fix you right up.
Good luck
Jerry

Thanks Jerry The only thing that I've tried so far to fix it is to buy a new coil, does the same thing. Could you ask Dell if he might come over here to answer my question?

Thanks
Bob B.

Bob..... ...there are 4 heat/runtime problems with frontmount N-Tractors.
1) runs for about 1 hr and quits, restarts after cooling off for about 2 hrs or overnite, BAD frontmount ignition coil, NOT yer stated problem
2) runs for about 5 mins, quits, restarts after about 15 mins, clogged fuel filters, NOT yer stated problem
3) runs for about 1 minute, quits, restarts after about 15 mins, BAD condenser, NOT yer stated problem
4) runs for about 15 minutes, quits, restarts after cooling off for about 1 hr, Gunked up ignition switch internal contacts. Does that sound like your stated problem? You doubt? Next time it quits, have a pre-made jumper wire with alligator clippies and jump around yer BAD ignition switch. Should start right up.

Unfortunately, the N-Ignition switch is NOT the most robust. I went thru 3 switches innna year before I got PO'd and bought a 25 amp waterproof Marine toggle switch. Ain't had a problem in 12 yrs. (and I never haffta go searching for a key)

Also note: dangleing whatevarrs from an ignition key also wears out ignition switches, makes'em intermittant, so you haffta hold yer tongue juss-sew. If'n ya gotta have sumptin on your ignition key to keep from loosing it, get one of those foam key bobbs from the outboard motorboat store, red or international orange or lemon yellow are eazier to spot when ya droppsitt innna cowpattie (BTDT)..... ...Dell
