Hi all, I’m new to this forum so I hope my questions are appropriate to this forum. If not, perhaps someone can direct me to another, more appropriate forum. I have an early, ‘60s Ford, 3500 backhoe/loader with a three cyl. diesel engine. I bought it used, reconditioned the hydraulics, and generally fixed most of the external stuff, but the driveline is as I bought it. I have been using it for a couple of years with out doing much else except greasing bushings and oil/filter changes. The use has been light, digging stumps, fill dirt, etc. as you would around personal acreage, no commercial use. I have developed a squeak in the engine which seems really strange. When I first heard it, it sounded like a tin shield of some kind rubbing metal to metal. I pulled the belt to eliminate the generator and water pump. No change. I lubed the drive shaft “U” joints to the front pump, no change. After about an hour for use/stopping to test and check, the squeak became more of a screech. Using a garden hose to listen with, I think I have narrowed the noise down to the engine block, between cyl. #1 and #2. At that point I stopped using it and now will have to go chasing wild geese. I hate to disassemble the engine with out having an idea of what I am looking for but unless any of you guys can give me a hint, a tear down is next. Any ideas? Thanks, Art.
