Ford 4000 Industrial Backhoe 723 Cylinder Advice

I have a 1964 Ford 4000 Industrial Backhoe Model 723 19-300. The serial number is 5580. The bucket cylinder needs replacing. My local hydraulic repair shop can't help because the piston is busted into pieces. I was hoping to order the necessary parts from my Ford dealer but they inform me that the parts and cylinder are obselete and no longer available. I was wondering if anyone had crossed this bridge and maybe found an after-market cylinder that would work. Any ideas or suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

I've purchased several items from Surplus Center in Nebraska. Highly recommend them, and they finally have a working website

I've crossed that bridge before with my Ford 713 backhoe. I used modern generic cylinders from places such as Surplus Center or Bailey (www.baileynet.com). The important things to match up are rod diameter, bore, retracted length, and stroke. Also the endpin style and diameter should looked at, although it may be necessary to cut the end hardware off the old cylinder and weld onto the new one (I did this when I replaced my crowd cylinder). Also some creative "hose adaptation" will probably be necessary as the new cylinders will be a standard style such as NPT or ORB, not the unusual 713/723 style.

Andy, I am in the process of hose adaptation and can use some help! What have you done to replace hoses with the 713/723 style fittings?

THanks!

Thanks Andy. I appreciate the information and am currently taking a look at the Bailynet web site.

They are a very good company and also have an exceedingly useful printed catalog. In addition to cylinders they also have all sorts of other useful hydraulic stuff like pumps, fittings, hoses, even parts to repair/build cylinders like rod stock, pistons, and glands. No affiliation, just a happy customer.

you should be able to take the measurements of the cylinder closed and open and find one that will work for you send me an e-mail and I'll give you a phone number for a place that may even have a used one
