My 640 gas engine has a lifter that will knock for about a minute and then quit and then after a few minutes it will do it again. This just started yesterday, Oil level is good, engine was warm when it started. what causes this to happen? Will I need to replace the lifter soon? Ben

Ben, if your noise is definitely coming from the valve cover, I think I have good news and bad news for you. I have repaired this symptom on several Ford 4 cyl. tractors ('53 thru '64). The good news is that it wasn't something serious; like a bad valve guide. The 'bad' news is that the gas tank had to come off to get the clearance to fix it. There is a steel oil line that brings oil from the oil galley in the block up to the rocker shaft. At the bottom end, it seals with a special o-ring (square or triangular in cross section). Be sure to get the right o-ring from New Holland so you don't have to go through this again. The noise results when the o-ring gets some age on it and can't grip well in the bore.
Then the oil pressure pushes the tube up occassionally, making the curved part at the top of the tube hit the top of the inside of the valve cover. I don't know why but it always seems to sound like it's right in time with the valves; hence I wondered the first time it happened, how could a valve be noisy when I know I just adjusted them properly. To remove the tube, I have to pry up carefully under the curved part to work it up out of the bore. Hope this helps.

How do you know it is a lifter? Remember, these are mechanical lifters. Could be it is not getting oil somewhere in the valve train. What is the overall condition of the engine, clean, well maintained with frequent oil and filter changes, blowby? Could be the lifter is worn where it contacts the cam and as the lifter turns it changes working surface. Could be a bent push rod. Could be a broken valve spring. Again, how do you know it is the lifter. It may never get worse or it could be the lifter is desintigrating against the cam.

I thought I had a similar problem developing - turned out to be a broken spring inside the distributor, the weight was knocking on the housing on my 960.
