When my dad died I kept the old ford. About 30 years ago he had the transmission rebuilt and we've put about 1600 hours on it since them. When the tractor is cold and you are in R-1 or in 9th it will operate just a few seconds and go to neutral. It works ok in all the other speeds. When the tractor warms up I have all the speeds. It is a 1959 model. Even cold it works in R-2 and in 10th which are the Over drive gears of R-1 and 9th. These are the only 2 gears that go to neutral and only when the tractor is cold. They work fine after it warms up. I read the book and adjusted the bands, also changed the fluid. It has done this for over 20 years. Dad just let it warm up and that is what I have to do also. Anyone have any advise. I really enjoy driving the old tractor.

Bill is correct. Ford offered an exchange program to get rid of those over-running clutch transmissions in the mid 60s. Fortunately many took them up on that offer. Unfortunately there are many of those original transmissions, like yours, still left out there. I have a fix for your problem. Email me if interested.

I have a 971 that does the same thing. Mine also does it in 5th and 6th gear. After it gets warm, all is well. The reason for this is the OVER-RUNNING clutch is worn. These are no longer available and quite a job to replace if you could find good one. I have been using mine this way for a number of years and I have just learned to live with it.
