Thanks for your prompt reply? Can you tell me what the difference is between the transmissions of the 4500 and 5000, Ford tractor. We want to bolt the 4500 up to the 5000. Thanks alvinnms

I thought you were swapping engines, not trannys. A 5000 transmission will not bolt up and work on any 3 cylnder rear axle, that's for sure. Sorry for any confusion.

You can use the 4500 tranny if you also use the 4500 rearend. the bolt pattern for the rearends are different secondly if you did get them hooked up your pto wouldn't work and you would have 8 reverses and 2 forwards gears.

Somebody correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't the output shaft on the 5000 on the bottom, and the 4000 on top. The 5000 was inverted while the 4000 had a straight through design. So, you would actually have to change the whole back half, not just the transmission. I'm just not sure what your exact plan is. Otherwise, I would not forsee to many problems. Ford did make the 5030, which had the 4 cylinder in a 3 cylinder chassis, whatever mods it had to make it fit, I don't know. HTH.

The transmissions will bolt up; no problem. What you have to watch is the clutch/flywheel. The hyd pump and independent PTO on the 5000 drive through a splined hub that traps the flywheel between it and the crankshaft. The transmission input shaft is hollow and surrounds the PTO shaft. The pilot bearing O.D. is something like 1.25". The 4500 will have a much smaller diameter transmission input shaft; depending on whether it has a manual, power reversing, or selectospeed transmission. The obvious answer would be to use the flywheel and clutch/torque converter/torque limiter for the transmission you are using. I don't know if a 3 cylinder flywheel will make a 4 cyl engine have dynamic balance problems or vice versa. That would be the critical question.

Rick, something tells me it wouldn't work. It might bolt up to the front, but not the rear. The rear bolt patterns are quite a bit different I think. The 4500 should be fitted with a 3-cylinder rear axle housing, the 5000 being a 4-cylinder rear axle housing.
