I had to dig out this old counter weight set up for a 3pt. hitch on an 850 to get traction in the snow. It's a solid iron cast weight, does not look homemade, its got long vertical thru-bolts that attach it to a common horizontal flat bar with the holes evenly spaced across it,( forget what you call those) and has the pins for the bottom arms on your 3pt. hitch. It rests balanced on the arms and my tractor lifts it with no problem. Not knowing how the pumps work on these (do have all books on the 600-800 series ) is there anything to be concerned about using a heavy counterweight like this in regards to the Hyd. pump ? ( Ct.Wt. is 1' thick, tapers to 6" at end, 2'x 2' square, must be heavy, need to weigh it ) Also, I would assume that the rear hydraulics on this tractor are in good shape, based on the fact that it lifts and holds the weight in the position set by the lever, while running. Good procedure to lower down attachments for safety & not strain hydraulics when not running was the rule when I was a kid.

As the other person said, limit chains, like used on some finish mowers, is a good way to support the weight. Farm supply stores, dealerships, mail order such as Value Built, and so on have them, they are fairly universal.

When you get a 300-900lb load back there, it's better to support it - generally used with a loader, one slams around into stuff & gives it a shock load.

I like the way you think; of the possible consequences, before instead of 'oops', later. Wish I always remembered to do that. Yes, I have seen damage to the hydraulic cylinder after long usage with counterweight on lift. A solution, as you've probably concluded by now, is to use chains (tractor supply stores have an adjustable chain kit available) or braces between the top link bracket and the ends of the cross drawbar that you described, to support the weight. Set the weight as low as practical (to keep your center of gravity low) and then block the lift lever (to the right of the seat) in the down position.

Try to think things out when possible, especially where equipment is concerned. I think a pair of clevices, a short chain( all which I have already ) and I should be able to support the weight from the top link & not worry about straining the system. Better to play it safe in any event.
