I'm getting a whining/grinding noise like its struggling to engage something, consistently, whenever I engage the starter ( FYI 12 volt sys. ) I turn the key off and on again, it works properly. By the sound of it, and the duration of this noise ( few seconds worth ) I had better get it taken care of. Just curious as to what this could be. I did pull the starter not too long after I noticed this, and the flywheel teeth looked ok, ( a little normal type wear, shiny, nothing catastrophic ) after it had been run several times.I've had to run it since, but I'm hoping this is a faulty starting motor drive, and that the gear is softer than the flywheel teeth if it could somehow screw the teeth up, must be a job to put in a new flywheel ! Once it does this it turns the motor without any noise or problems, shut it off and you have to flip the key quick , it whines / grinds a few seconds, then hit the key again, its engaged. Sound familiar to anyone ? Faulty drive ? I took a look in the shop manual 1955-1960 600-800 original Ford shop manual and they do not look too complicated to re-hab, are there supply houses the starter rebuilders buy parts from ? I see the parts book has #s any of it still available ? Thanks again !
