I run a 5' blower with my 24 pto hp 1710. It does have live pto. If it didn't I'd have to lift the 3ph before stopping to keep the chute from clogging. People do use blowers without live pto but chute clogging can be a problem.

My blower doesn't do too well much below pto rpm. Blowers that have 24" fans with cupped blades throw snow better than mine. Some people operate them a lower rpm's by choice. No guarantees, but if it's got a Sherman TX it may work fairly well but probably not with my conventional type blower.

Irrespective of how far the blower throws snow, you don't want to go very fast with a 3ph blower. Faster ground speeds take more power and steering becomes a chore. My 1710 goes .8 mph at pro rpm in its lowest reverse. I use that for deep snow and tight maneuvering. The next reverse goes 2 mph which is OK for most work. My next choice is 4 mph and I usually don't want to go that fast--takes too much concentration. The one thing about 3ph blowers is that ground speeds are pretty slow.

I use a 7' with my 1720. As you say, slow reverse gears, & a live pto.

The Sherman I believe slows down the pto as well as the reverse gears, so no help there.

I've heard of people using an N, but it can't be any fun.

I have had a lot of experience with 3ph snowblowers. I can't imagine trying to run one without live pto! There was a post on this board awhile back from someone who was trying to do just that and having problems.

Bob,

You reconized part of the problem, no live PTO. The next major problem is the speed of your reverse gear, as 671 pointed out, you would need the Howard step down to keep your PTO RPM up and your speed down.

Your snowblower manufacturers recommend 10 HP per foot of blower, I don't know of anyone building a two and a half foot blower for a 3 point hitch so you're going to run far short of power.

I'd say if you want to run a blower on a tractor you should consider something other than an N for the job. Good luck.

Mike

Unless you have a howard step down you won't have any fun with a snowblower. A sherman step down won't work because it slows the PTO as well as the tractor. With a newer tractor and live PTO you can use the clutch to ease it back. Also the N doesn't have power for a very big blower.
