You need the real Repair Manual and the Parts Manual BEFORE you start this job.

I have 4400 3 cylinder industrial version of the 4000. The 4000 is the same in this respect as I removed all the hydraulics from a 4000 and installed it on my 4400.

The two filters one intake and one return are down inside under the top cover. If you have an independent pto forget about changing either one. There is a hydraulic clutch in there for the pto. The filters are in front of the clutch. The clutch has to be removed to get at the filters! To remove the clutch the tractor has to be split.

The manual says to service them regularly. But they don't tell you how!

If you do not have an independent pto, if you have live or no pto, you will not have the hydraulic clutch in there and you should be able to get at the filters.

Regards

i was told by a ford/new holland mechanic that the filter is under the rockshaft housing. it is not accessible from the outside, gotta pull the housing to get to it.

Bill, on the 2000/3000 and I think the 4000 as well there are two filters inside the lift cover, suction and return. One is easy to replace, the other could not be removed by houdini himself without splitting the tractor. Check the archives, some people have said it can be removed through the pto shaft hole. I doubt it though.

the suction is nothing more than a screen strainer...

the return is a filter that contantly filters the fluid as it is returned to the reservior.. but this filter has a bypass so if it gets clogged, it will simply let the fluid return to the reservoir through the spring loaded ball vavle in the nut that holds the filter on.. if your changing the filter becuase you have a problem.. it will NOT fix the problem.. if your doing routine maintainance,, then drain, flush, and changing the filter is ok,,... just my experience..
