861 starts only at idle throttle

My 861 has got to where it will only start on idle throttle. It goes dead two or three times before I can "catch" it with the choke. If I open the throttle up some then it won't start. It has just recently started doing this. Any suggestions? I'm not much of a trouble shooter in mechanics. Thanks.

Bill, I'd start by checking the sediment bulb and any other fuel filters on it. I'm not sure how many there is. 1 in the tank and 1 in the bulb. Maybe 1 in the carb where fuel line hooks up. If this doesn't cure the problem, I'd look at a carb kit. John

Sounds like it is starving for air. I would check the air filter and the hoses connecting it to the carb. If all is clean and clear, check for water in the gas, should be visable from sediment bowl.

Daniel, yes I agree this could also be the problem. We had a 2n that acted similar to this and the air filter was plugged. John

As others have said check fuel system to insure an adequite supply to engine. Also check compression, as when an engine gets tired it will not create enough vacuum with the throttle butterfly open to draw the gas in. This shows up more on updraft and/or sidedraft carbs than on, say you truck or car.
