Those hyd pumps sure do need a filtering system. I don't understand how they can be converted to live hyds without a two stage clutch and pressure plate system. Something has got to turn the pump while the clutch is depressed for the lift to work. alvinnms

LIVE THANG, LIVE HYDRAULICS FOR THE FORD N AND FERGUSON TRACTORS. I now have a live hydraulics kit ready to install in about an hour or two. I am going to call it "LIVE THANG" in keeping with all the other stuff I have to offer on the Internet for owners of the 9N/2N/8N Ford tractors and Ferguson tractors with the orignal Ferguson system lift.

I am going to be asking $375.00 for the basic unit.

If you want a filter in the suction side of the system which I reccommend but is not necessary add $60.00 to the basic price. Having a filter on the suction line will give the lift system a filter which we all know the Ferguson/Ford hydraulic system has been long lacking and needing. The addition of a filter and the plumbing for it would bring the price of the basic unit to $435.00

To add an additional two spool remote control valve less the mounting bracket and without any additional piping/plumbing will add an additional $200.00 to the basic unit price bringing the total to $635.00. A single spool valve is also available at about $125.00 additional if the two spool is not needed.

Basic unit will give you live hydraulics for the 3 point hitch. The lift will operate when the clutch is depressed and the PTO is not turning. Or you can use it along with the PTO pump with the clutch engaged and the 3 point hitch will come up twice as fast as it now does.

If more sofisticated models are requested I will give a price upon descripion of the valves and taps etc you want to operate such as remote cylinders etc.

Please state what year tractor the device will be used on and if it has the original generator or has been converted to an alternator and what size width belt it uses. Wide or narrow.

The older model engine block castings are different than the later model engine block castings. On the older blocks like in the 9N/2N and the 8Ns built before 1951 the oil filter mounting boss and the oil filler/breather openings are different than the 8N blocks. The earlier models have these two part closer to the front of the block by about 3 inches. this makes it necessary to have a different mounting bracket for each one. Same goes for the Ferguson tractors. On the Ferguson tractors other than the TO 20 I will need to know what model so I can make a pattern for the particular model. Have to know what belt size etc the engine carries.

Just send me a money order or a personal check to - Zane Sherman,
2824 Renfroe Road,
Talladega Alabama, 35160 and I will be glad to get one on the way to you.

If you search the archives, you will eventually find some posts which indicate that the pump is driven by the fan belt - like a power steering pump.

My understanding is that Zane's LIVE THANG utilizes an engine mounted pump to either replace the function of a dead pump or augment the function of the trans driven pump. That's why you have to specify whether you have a front mount distributor or a side mount distributor so Zane can set you up with the correct pump mounting hardware.

On "another" tractor forum a former YT Mag member mentioned having built his own live hydraulic system from auto junkyard parts. His comment was "yes you can do it, but it's time and money saved to just buy Zane's pre-engineered system".

You are assuming the pump has to be driven off the tranny. :) Can easily be run off some other power source in front of the tranny - vbelt for example.

The way the old Fords, and Fergusons, are set up the pump lays sumerged in oil at the bottom of the transmission, and the pressure outlet tube is part of the tractor housing, so it would be very difficult to tap into. alvinnms

Alvin,

Seeing as how I have one of Zane's Live Thangs on my 8N and it works great and as advertised, does this mean I have to go out and tell the old guy you said it can't work and I'll have to take it back off.

No thanks, your opinion doesn't really matter when it comes to what does and does not work. Which is good news for anyone wanting live hydraulics on their 8N.

Mike

The original pumps are piston pumps containing check valves, so there is no chance of backflow through the original pump. The add-on, crankshaft driver pump supplies oil to the pressure test port of the original system.

probably a front mounted pump that is plumbed into the existing hydraulics.. Zane has come up with serveral worth-while and useful mods for these older series of tractors..

Is there any other brand of tractor that has manufacturers still actively trying to make their 1939 model even more useful?
