I had the same thing happens on my '85 f-150.
I thought I had a blown the motor. Turns out the fuel modulator seal had ruptured allowing my cylinders to fill up with gas. The motor was "hydraulicing" the cylinders not allowing the pistons to compress. Try taking out all the plugs and see if there is evidence of gas on plugs or in cylinders.
good luck!

Think about it when you turned it off. Did you happen to hear a metallic ping or clang? My 289 did this years ago. It jumped time. That is, the timing chain jumped one tooth. It sounded just like you described during cranking.

If this only happens when the engine is hot (just recently shut off), I would suspect the culpret is heavy carbon deposits. When you try to restart, the carbon is igniting the fuel mixture well early in the compression stroke, and your starter is fighting against it. If your problem happens when the engine is stone cold, look for the problem elsewhere.

If I understand what you are saying ,the starter will not turn the engine over (crank) but it will rock the engine up to compression and then fail to turn it over(lop in ond out of compression). Sounds like a dead battery , bad battery connections/cables or a bad starter. Clean the battery terminals first. Then try jump starting it. That should point you in the right direction.

It your grandfather is around ask him if he knows what wrong with it --you'll be surpised how well people know there equipment after owning it for that long.

If its been sitting and it has gas in the cylinders like one poster said check your oil for gas in it. If present change your oil.
