Hello,
I was wondering if anyone has noticed if their exhaust has a dull red color to it while working fairly hard. I know, what am I doing operating at night anyhow? I am thinking I might be a little lean. Any help would be appreciated. Mark

I just bought my tractor a few months ago. I found the timing very retarded. I just got finished replacing the valves. They were all burned. If the spark is too late the fuel will still be burning when the exhaust valves open and this can burn the valves and cause exhaust to over heat.

Hi Mike, It is normal for an exhaust manifold to get red when the engine is working at medium to heavy loads. However, lean fuel mixture, retarded ignition timing, or advanced camshaft timing, can cause elevated exhaust temperatures. After working the engine hard for a while shut it off while still under load, without closing the throttle. Remove the sparkplugs(it's ok to let it cool off first). If you are using the correct sparkplug for the engine, the ignition timing is correct, and the spark plug has light to medium tan deposits on the insulator, your fuel mixture is not too lean. Good luck...Al English

Probably nothing to get excited about. I have owned several tractors that would do that, and they all lived.
