Converting the tractor to 12v will allow you to use standard 12v negative ground accessories and battery. This allows for easier jumping off, swapping out batteries, and using commonly available lighting and other 12v accessories. Your starter will always turn over good and strong for a long time. Also 12v electronic ignition will make your tractor purr. Workmaster stood for 134 cubic inch motor. Powermaster was for the 172 cubic inch motor. 601 series gas tractors were around 31hp.

Thanks for the replies. This is how I learn to care for my 641 ford and my to20 ferguson. 641 is new to me. How do I boost it off if I need to since it is 6v?

I would use the 6v TO you have????

I have a $80 battery trickle/charge/booster for 6/12v systems, a very good investment. Charge the battery just a bit, then put it on 200 and start the tractor.

You can use cables off a 12 volt if you are very careful, make sure tractor is in neutral, and only jump to the starter, not to the battery. I've not done this, so best not say any more on the practice. But you always hook negative to negative, pos to pos.

Same as you would a 12 volt. A 12 volt short boost will not hurt this system. Just make sure your negative cable is hitched to negative on both ends. Same for positive. If you're jumping directly to the starter, place the black (negative) lead on the starter post and on the negative terminal of the boosting vehicle.

1. Only reason to convert to 12v is if you need 12v power for some monitor or implement you are using. Otherwise a well-maintained 6v system will work just fine for you. With lower voltage, you need bigger wires, and need to make sure all the grounding straps (both ends) are nice & clean. I live in Minnesota & use all 3 of my original 6v tractors in cold weather. Works fine. This question is sort of like which is better, JD or IH???? :) You will get different responces form others, and that is fine.

2. Because it's a glitzy Hunk of a name & will enhance sales over other tractor makes..... (Pssst - salesmanship.)

3. 37 pto hp, gas or diesel - yours must be gas on 6v.

Do you know the exact model of it, 641, 651, etc.? (4, 5, or SoS tranny, live pto or not, etc.?)

Friendly reminder....Just because it has a 601 Workmaster decal it could be something else. We bought one with the 601 Workmaster decal on it,l turns out it's actually a 641...It's a 1963 model and is 6v..... Great little tractor

601 series tractors were last produced in 1962. A 641 is a 601 series tractor. However, by late '62 and all of '63 they would have been designated model 2000.

The 601 decal is correct. There is no 601 tractor, it only means the 01 series vise the hundred series. The one decal covers them all. The specific decal (651,641) is available also and they look kinda neat.

The early 01 series tractors decals were model specific. That is a 641 was decaled as that, same as 541, 661, 671, etc. Economics and simplicity probably eliminated the middle digit from the decals, but not from angry drivers.

Then you likely have a 641 Workmaster.

It's difficult to understand how Ford named/numbered these things. The least obvious tag (641) is the most important number in identifying them. 'Workmaster' was just a hot generic name that covered all the 601 series tractors.

The 1st number of the 100 series tells us what style & size the tractor is. (6 means small engine, lower utility wide front).

The last number says if it is older or newer (1 means you have the later model of the 100 series, slightly newer).

The middle number tells us a lot about the tractor - pto, 3pt hitch, tranny type, etc. No one ever seems to know this number, but it tells so very much about their tractor. :)

There never ever was an actual 601 tractor built - that is just the basic description of the series.

(edit - sure is interesting to find out what words are not allowed around here - had to susbtitute 'hot' for my first choice.... :)

1. I agree, 6 Volt worked for the first 45 years, just maintain it.
2. If you think workmaster is a glitzy hunk of a name, watch out for the POWERMASTER.....
