My question is : How much different is it to changes the rear seals on a Ford 4000? 1964 I think.

I have changed the rear axle and seals on my Jubilee.

A friend of mine needs one replaced, the local dealer ( with out looking at it ) said it would run $600.00. So I don't know if the dealer was going to replace every thing on that side or if that was for taking the tractor in , repairs and returning it.

So I'm still kinda in the dark on this too.

Does anyone have some opionions? ( and I know that you do.) that's what I like about this board.

thanks J52J/Jess

I just changed the seals on my 3500, which uses the same service manual as the 4000. It wasn't that hard, but if I had read the manual first, as Bern later suggested, it would have been a lot easier. The hardest part is getting the bearing retaining nut out without the special wrench. The dealer's service manager told me to be real careful to save the shims and put them back just as they came out to be sure the preload on the bearings would be the same. That tells me that they don't bother to check when they do it. Which would explain why, after they changed the seals for me five or six years ago, I always thought the rearend was just naturally so tight and was so amazed at how freely the wheels turned after I did it myself this time and had to add two 8-10 thousandths shims.

P.S. If you want, I'll try to scan the appropriate two or three pages and email them to you.

It wasn't a big deal to do it on my 4000 row crop. Shouldn't be that much different on a standard 4 cyl 4000.

Note that if you don't take out some of the shims, the new seal will probably start leaking. Read the factory service manual for instructions on how to check the bearing preload.

For $600, I'd buy an airplane ticket and come to your place to fix it.

Parts are a little different, but procedure for a 4000 prior (4 cyl) is similar to fixing the NAA. Be sure to replace cracked or broken shims and use sealant between the shims.
