I am restoring a '57 Ford 600 series tractor. The gas tank has a good amount of old residue, trash, and rust floating around in it. How should I clean out the tank? Also how do I remove the shutoff valve mounted under the tank? Thanks!

Easiet way to remove shutoff valve from under the tank is to remove the tank. You'll have to remove the tank anyway to properly clean it out. Use kerosene/diesel mixture to swish, wash and otherwise remove residue and rust particles from inside. If it is badly rusted inside you can get sealer from places like Eastwood, etc. The only attention I had to give to the shutoff valve was replace the rubber O ring between valve and tank(o-ring available at local hardware store). Two bolts hold the valve on and are easly removed after tank is off tractor.

I've been down the same road with my 641.I took the tank off and tried to clean it out with rocks and cleaners.I put it back together and the results were not very satisfactory. I didn't take to long until it developed a leak where the tank is fastened to the mounting bracket so I took it off AGAIN and took it to a radiator shop to have it cleaned out and sealed. It cost me a $100 but well worth it. As for the screen, it should have come out with the shutoff valve. You'll just have to dig it out.Good luck

Thanks for the replies. I have a followup question. I removed the tank and removed the two mounting bolts but the shutoff valve seems to have a small pipe attached which extends into the tank. The corrosion inside is such that I cannot tell whether there is some screen or other apparatus attached to the end of the pipe. Should I force the pipe out of the hole or should I try to break away the corrosion and clear the hole?

This hose is your safety net. The theory in those days (no fuel gauge) was that you open your fuel valve a certain amount and run. Sooner or later, if you don't refuel first, your tractor runs out of gas. You then jump off and adjust the shutoff valve to a new position and the tractor is back in business with the 2 gallon reserve....better go gas er up as this time when it dies, your dead.

I don't remember the positions of the valve but it is something like 3/4 turn for normal, wide open for reserve, or the reverse of that or open 2 turns vs full open....I always watch the fuel so I never use that function.

Hello,
Don't forget that you can get parts from this site as well. The prices are competitive and arrive in a timely manner. I have purchased items for several different brands of tractor and have never been disappointed.

Imperial Restoration

Call em up and tell em what you're doing. They have cleaners and sealers if needed.

Great products, they work, and prompt response and shipping. The stuff is pricey, but 1/10 the price of a new tank AND it fits.....you still have your old tank and yo don't have to worry about mounts fitting and fuel guage sending unit hole and all that you would have with a new tank purchase.

My fuel strainer has 2 screws attached from under the tank. If you need a new strainer/shutoff valve they too are pricey at about $45. I think I got mine at Tractor Supply. If not try your Ford house or Walt's tractor parts (www.)....bought from him on occasion and prices are reasonable and shipping is at your house in 2 days for $8 on small items.

Rremoval of the shutoff valve can be two ways. First wait until you remove the tank; or second, remove the valve cover then the two bolts. If you don't remove the valve cover there is not enough clearance for the screen on the top of the shut off valve. What ever you do DO NOT lose the two bolts; they are next to impossible to replace.

If you plan to clean the tank, you really need to remove it from the tractor. Undo the fuel line at the carb inlet filter, undo your sending wire and 4 bolts and pop her off. Once upside down, it's a walk in the park..
