I have finally begun re-assembly of my transmission. I was looking at the manual, and the parts, and am puzzled. How is oil supposed to get to the front input shaft bearing? (no PTO) I don't see an oil passage or journal nearby it that would supply any to it, like the rear input shaft bearing. In the PTO version, there is a journal just behind the bearing that I would think deliver plenty of oil where it would get into the front bearing. (This bearing failed badly - lost the cage- the input shaft could wobble around and ruined the spline on the oil pump impeller also)

It also seems that when band 1 is activated, there is no oil supplied to the passage that goes into the direct drive clutch. This means no oil supply to the sleeve and seal rings at the front of the input shaft. Fortunatly, for my machine anyways, park does apply the direct drive clutch, and supply oil to this area, as most of the run time is in using the back hoe, as opposed to driving.

Thank you,
Dave

I have seen many of these bearings fail, and it does seem to me that they're not pressure lubed. I would just put in a new high quality bearing, and it will probably go for as long as you'll ever have the thing. Most of the bearing failures that I saw were on very high hour machines.

The journal that you talk about just behind that bearing I do believe is for PTO engagement pressure. There would be no way to extract lube pressure from that.

hi Dave,
Maybe Ford decided captured oil in the direct drive clutch housing was good enough--or they just took the easy way out. Can't remember what it looks like--no possibility of splash lube to the input shaft bearing?

Maybe Bern will pick up again on your discussion.
regards, George

The picture is from the Ford manual for my 4000 series S-O-S.

The input shaft spline is to the left of the oil pump at the far left,
the direct drive clutch far right. The gears and parts on the input shaft
between bearing "B" and bearing "R" are not in my transmission,
as it has no PTO.

Oil flows from the pump through passage "M" to the distributor.
The passage "D" supplies oil to the direct drive clutch when it is engaged.

I a transmission with PTO, oil supplied by from the right by
lube passage "L" would flow out of the journal at "P" and oil
the bearing "B".

On the NON-PTO version, the lube passage "L" stops about
where I put the "L".

While bearing "R" should get a good supply of oil from the front direct drive clutch journal, (below and right of the "R") The only oil
that bearing "B" gets is what can leak past the seal "S" that directs
the oil to the direct drive clutch.
(only supplied while clutch is engaged)

Thanks again,
Dave
