3000 vs. 2600

Two tractors sell on two different auctions on Saturday, (4/7/01), within 90 miles of me. One is a 3000 gas, 4600 hours, 1972 model. The other is a 2600 diesel, 1800 hours, 1978 model. Neither has had a loader on it, both are one-owner tractors. The 3000 is from a working farm, while the 2600 has been used as an "estate tractor".

I need a tractor that can clear snow with a rear blade, run a 6' rotary mower, spray pastures, spread fertilizer and manure. Eventually I might want to move a few large round bales (with the three-point), and might add a loader to clean out the barn. I won't be doing any heavy-duty loader work.

I've seen the full specs on the 3000 on Oak's page. Is there a similar page anywhere for the 2600? I've also read the gas vs. diesel debate, and don't need anymore info on that, other than should I be afraid of a gas motor with 4600 hours? I'd rather not have to plug in the tractor for it to start in the (Kansas) winter.

Were there any major improvements in the x600 series, compared to the x000's? Any other advice on my decision? I'm guessing the 3000 will sell for significantly less.

Basically, a 2600 has virtually the same engine as a 3000, the same gearbox and transmission, with better hydraulics and styling etc. the *600 range replaced the 1000 series in 1975.

Neither. I went to look at both tractors Friday. The 3000's tires were nearly gone. It made me worry what else was worn out. The 2600 was really nice. Always shedded, glossy paint, 1770 hours. Local dealers emblem, like new.

Went to see the 2600 sell. Auctioneer said come about 1 PM (sale started at 9 AM). Watched them sell junk until 3:30 PM. The tractor brought $9500, well beyond my budget. I didn't get to bid once. Oh well. I'll keep looking.

I'd be more concerned with whether or not they had live PTO. With either of these tractors, an 8 speed transmission is a pretty good indication that it does have live PTO,but NOT a given. Any other gear transmission (6-speed, 4-speed) is a clear indication the tractor DOES NOT have live PTO. Absent of the fuel question, this would be my #1 criteria on whether to even go look at one of these tractors. Otherwise, a couple of HP one way or the other, and they are basically interchangable.

Actually, it has been my experience that the 2600 will go for the same or maybe a little less than the 3000. GAS or Diesel aside, the 3000 tends to hold together better. But both are great machines. Your chances of used / salvage parts are a lot greater on the 3000.
