I recently purchased a 12-Volt conversion kit for a 9N. It shows the 3-terminal resistor between the starter and ampmeter and the starter and coil. First why is it necessary, second how do I get around it? I don't have it and can't get it. The company that sold me the kit can't help. So, what do I do? If this helps, I am changing the starter to a 12-volt also, so there is nothing 6-volt left. No lights, ect.

holler at me if you don't get it going. I wrote the instructions for the CNH conversion kits.

Whoa. First, you don't have to change the starter. It will run fine on 12v. Second, you need the original resister because your voltage drop kit probably only includes a 50% step down resister to take the 12v to 6v. in order to run the ignition. You can't run the original 6v. coil on 6v. because it's designed to run on from 3-4.5 volts, points closed. Hence, you need the additional resister to bring the 6v. down to the proper 3-4.5 volts. This resister originally mounted on the reverse side of the dash on the left side of the steering colum. This resister is available at NH and other aftermarket folks. I'll bet there are more bothched 12v conversions out there than good ones, so I suggest before you dive into this you get on the 2n/9n Board which is part of this site and pose some of your questions to a fellow called "Dell".

Thanks,
It almost makes sense now. I think that I can take it from here. I will get the resistor and put it all together the way the wiring diagram shows it. It would be nice if these companies selling conversion kits would give you more information on how their products are supposed to work.

FWIW: The alternator must be run on a negative ground system, or bad things happen to it. You'll lose a little on the 6v coil output going to negative ground, but you won't be able to tell it.
