I finally got around to replacing the heat indicator gauge on our 53 NAA. When I went to unscrew the sending bulb from the block the heat tube was not attached to the sealing flange and bulb anymore, no wonder the gauge didn't work. The problem is I can only move the flange out about a quarter of an inch and then it stops and can't grip it to get a good pull. Does anyone have any advice or tricks to get it out that might help. ALso, as a last resort, is it possible to get to it if the head is removed. I may what till I take the head off to check and possibly rebuild the engine. But I would rather not, so any help would be greatly appreciated.

Bill, I had the same problem on my 640. However, when I took the head off today I was able to get a grip on the nut with vice grips and undo it about a quarter turn at a time. There is no way to get at it from inside the head. Good luck, sometimes these things can frustrate the heck out of you.
