I searched the archives but couldn't find this: do I need to drain differential and hydraulic oil to replace 841 rear pto oil seal? or can I park it downhill, remove the cover and remove the oil seal without removing the shaft? Thanks

If you remove the shaft, both reservoirs will need to be drained. Depending on the type of seals on the bearing, you might be able to extract the old seal and replace it without losing much fluid.

I have always drained both reservoirs and pulled the shaft. That way I can also check/change the bearing. The hydraulic fluid can obsorb a lot of water and needs to be changed periodically any way. The rear end grease usually is good, but new fluid is cheap. Good luck.

I would definitely recommend draining and removing the entire shaft with retainer. Then disassemble the retainer and inspect the wear sleeve on the shaft. More than likely it will have a groove worn into it from the seal. A new seal won't last long if this is the case. Except on very rare occasion, we pretty much always replace the sleeve, bearing and seal while it's out. Why cut a corner that will probably bite you in the near future? "Do it right, do it once"...
