Welded diff case on my NAA

I recently purchased a 1953 NAA. When I got it home, I noticed a rather large amount of gear oil on the floor of my trailer. I thought it might be coming from the drain plug, but no such luck. At some point, the bottom of the transmission case has been JB-welded to stop the leak. Didn't notice that when I first looked at it! :( Got to snooping around some more, and noticed that the differential case has been welded from one side to the other across the bottom, about an inch back from the transmission mounting flange. Luckily, this is NOT leaking!
Anybody else out there had this happen or seen this before? Other than the leak, which WILL be fixed right, should I be worried? Any thoughts or suggestions will be appreciated.

My NAA also had a cracked case. It was caused by water getting in the oil and freezing. I drained the oil, cleaned the cracked area as well as I could, took a grinder and v'ed out the crack, then put metal putty...the kind that comes in a roll with the hardner...you kneed it together and smooth it on. Still holding and it doesn't leak.

Broken Diff case fairly common on NAA. NAA has specific case which is why they are so hard to find and so expensive. $750 a while back.

Thanks Rick,

Should I worry about the welded spot as long as it holds?

A properly welded piece of metal will outlast the base plate.
