Or are they two different transmissions? If so, what's different about them? Thanks!

The term select-o-matic is used in stationary egines manufactured by Enterprise Co. patened by them. This company is now owned by Cooper Bessemer Engine Manufactur. These engines are designed to operate on a varriety of fuels diesel fuel, natural gas, methane gas from sewage treatment facilites and landfill gas. The select-o-matic is used to make the transition from one fuel to another. In San Jose Ca. the 14 stationary engines at the WPCP run on a combination of all the fuels mentioned and on 5 of the Enterprise engines they switch from diesel to the blended fuel with the use of the select-o-matic

o-Matic was never on a tractor, but it is used to refer to the SoS trannies at times.

Didn't some car have a Select-o-Matic tranny????

The Select-o-Speed is the Ford transmission offered beginning in 1959. I've heard it referred to as a Select-o-matic but I'm not sure if that name was ever officially put on a transmission made by Ford or anyone else. The select-0-speed is often also called "SOS".

Select-O-Matic, Select-A-Jerk, Jerk-O-Matic, are some other names the Select-O-Speed trans have been called, also. Funny thing is, JD pretty much copied the idea from Ford, And no one calls a JD powershift anything but powershift, And in MHO, they jerk and jump worse than Ford does. Properly set up and used, the SOS trans isn't bad. I have one on a 4000 and it is smooth as silk.

Geo, in fact taking your point about the power shift, the guy who designed the SOS moved to John Deere and then designed the power shift. I am told the design is pretty much the same.

The problems with SOS transmissions are ABUSE. In the UK the Ford sales team didnt help matters. They would demonstrate the SOS by driving flat out in tenth then sticking it into reverse. Kinda sent the wrong message. You wouldnt drive your car and wack the auto from D to R at 70mph would you?

I love them SOS trans but these days the only thing that puts me of is parts. Here in Australia they are getting real hard to find, like impossible. Thats why I passed on a 5000 SOS a few months ago and got a 5000 Dual Power instead. I will probably try for a real early 6x 5000 SOS just for my collection and not to work to hard but my current 5000 is still a working tractor. Tell me how new parts are in the US?

Cheers

Steven B

If you know the right person in the correct dealership then you can obtain almost any part needed. I just recently acquired all the seals needed to fix a blown C-sun gear seal but it took some scrambling and scratching by a very good dealer to get them all. Some parts are just no longer available - like the control valve assemblies and input shafts (or so I have been told). Other parts are made out of unobtainium at this time and you will have to pay dearly for them if you can find them.

Treat them kindly and don't abuse them and they should be around for a while longer. Don't want to think about what I will have to do if/when my SOS bites the final big one..... ....

Select-a-Matic was a tranny used in the Ford big cars (Galaxie's, Fairlane's back in the late 50's or early 60's. There was also a Cruise-a- Matic.
