Hello

i own a 71 3000 Diesel with a generator an want to slide in a alternator...Most likely a bosch unit since this is most common here.
But i would like to keep the idiot light operating. How should i hook it up?The bosch unit has 3 terminals, one that goes to the ignition switch and two big ones that goes to the battery.
Thanks

yes,,yu will loose your tach drive, easiest way is to fix what yu have, is generally quite cheap, take the gen and regulator to yer local rebuild guy and he can fix you right up, if you really want to go with the Bosch, the idiot light wire you want goes to the voltage regulator, is one of the wires hooked to it for exitation, cut it off the reg, find the field wire coming back from yer gen, and hook the two together at the old regulator spot and yu will have idiot light wire right to yer alternator spot, yu will not need a large alternator, anything over 35 amps output will do the trick unless you have a lot of electrical add ons. And make sure yu get a pulley to fit the belt width on the tractor

Asbjorn,
On most of the bosch alternators, the wire coming from the igniton switch is to run the idiot light.
To hook up your alternator come off the side of the idiot light that is not coming from the key and hook it to your small post coming out of the alternator. That should make your light work. That is how most of the bosch's with the three terminal plug on the back of it work.
Hope this helps, jstpa

Asbjorn, I'm not going to try to answer your question but I did want to put in that if you swap to an alternator you'll probably lose the use of the original tachometer. Why not just repair or replace the generator? I have a 72 3000 and the generator works perfect. Having said this though I know others favor an alternator.

I am running generators and alternators and yes my gens run my tachs. I personally cannot tell the difference in performance of either. In cars, yes, but seems tractor alternators have more poles, so at lower rpm's they put out more voltage....let's see, poles x rpm's = watts or something like that so more poles means you don't need so many rpm's for a given output.

Get on www and look for gens. I found a guy in New England that remans and sells new ones only over the web. Mine (with the tach gear) was around $70 and about $10 shipping UPS. Was here in a couple of days. Great guy, great service, and have had no problems with it. (Don't remember his name). Sorry.
