Ford 641 Oil Leak (Transmission?)

I just got a 1959 641 Workmaster. There's a small plate on the bottom of the tractor, about under the transmission. It appears to have holes in all 4 corners, and one in the middle. There are bolts in 3 of the corner holes, but one corner and the middle one have nothing in them. There is an intermittant drip from the center hole. What's this plate, and what's supposed to go in there. Is it supposed to have a plug there, or is there supposed to be a bolt going up into something? I'm not too familiar with this old girl yet, and I haven't picked up a shop manual yet, so if anyone is familiar with this, a little help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Bob

My tractor did the same thing it could be eather motor oil or transmission oil. What happened on my tractor was there were small plugs like freeze plugs on end of shift fork. I guess the shift fork had knocked one out allowing tranny oil to leak through into clutch housing and out through weep hole. hope this helps.

How did you fix that? Did that require splitting the tractor in the middle, or was it a simpler fix?

Bob, Is this at the front or rear of tranny? If it is at the rear, this would be where the hydraulic safety {check} valve is located. Should be straight below the seat on bottom right side. As your location is pretty vauge I'd get a manual and look. This is the only cover I can think of on the bottom, without looking at my tractor. And there sitting out in the rain. John

It's just in front of where the shift shifting lever is. It's about 3 or 4 inches square, and it's on the bottom right. There's another plate behind it, under the seat, about where the brakes attach. That one isn't square. I just got the tractor last week, and the manual is ordered, but not here yet.

Judging by your description I'd say the plate should have another bolt in the corner hole and a cotter pin in the center one. This would be basically a "clean out" hole, so to speak. It's open into the clutch housing area forward of the trans. If a leak develops in the front trans seal, for example, oil could drip out of the center hole.

So it looks like the fact that those holes don't have the right stuff in them is a small problem, and the oil coming out of them is actually a larger problem up inside the tractor. Is that a fair assessment?

Bob;
The fact that the holes do not have the proper stuff is not really a problem. it is just a access plate. Yes it should have 4 bolts in it one in each corner but three is not going to make it fall off. A cotter pin goes in the center hole and it is there to keep dirt from plugging hole. Remove the three bolts and take the plate off. Install a cotter pin in center hole and replace cover. You may or may not be able to install 4th bolt. It may be stripped out or broken off.
This area is the clutch area. the front seal on transmission or rear seal on engine is leaking. It can become a problem if the oil gets to the clutch because it will make it slip. If that is not the case as long as you make sure transmission and engine are full of oil there is no problem. You are not hurting any thing by using it. You just got a oil leak. It will require splitting tractor to replace transmission seal and/or clutch. The engine rear main seal may or may not be able to be replaced by dropping engine oil pan. Do not know about yours. some can some can not.

Thanks John, and everyone else for the info. Since this is a "backup" tractor, it won't get a ton of hours on it. I'll keep the oil levels checked and full. Over time, I'll be able to see what one is dropping, and eventually I'll get it fixed.
