I have three Ford gas tractors with 172 c.i. engines: a 1955 850, a 1957 860, and a 1960 841. Recently, a friend pointed out that my 860 had an undersized carb on it - perhaps from a 600. The flange on that carb did not line up with the flange on the intake manifold - it was smaller. I bought a TSX-813 to replace it, and the flange on it lines up with the manifold as it should. However, the outlet on the air cleaner and the tube that connects it to the carb is too small for the air intake on the TSX-813. The 841 has a large inlet on the carb, too, but has an equally large outlet on the air cleaner. The 850 carb has a air small inlet like the one on the carb I removed from the 860, but the flange lines up with the flange on the intake manifold.

Do I need to change out the air cleaner, too, on my 860 to use the carb with the larger air intake, or should I just rig something up to adapt?
Thanks for you help.

Bill, The carb. on an 860 should be a TSX 706 or TSX 593. The TSX 813 is for the 801 series tractor even though the motor is a 172ci. the plumbing is a bit different and also the carb. rebuild kit. Hope this helps. Dave.

First, thanks for the replies.

Re: the TSX-813 being for 801 series tractors - I briefly held the carb in place on the tractor, seems that the intake for the fuel and the points of attachment for the throttle and the choke all lined up. The only issue was the air intake. Was I mistaken?

Re: the problem with the old carb: I can't say that I know for certain that the carb was at fault, but the tractor misses on the #1 cylinder more often than not. I have checked the compression, spark, etc. and could find nothing wrong with it. The other three cylinders all fire strongly, and it starts on the first turn. I even took it to a Ford mechanic who spent considerable time on it and came up empty-handed. Is it possible that the small carb just wasn't flowing enough fuel? Aside from all of that, I just want the tractor to be "correct" within reason.

Maybe small leak in intake manifold gasket at #1 is leaning out mixture?

Rick,

That is definitely worth checking. Is there a simple way to determine whether that is happening w/o preemptively replacing the gasket?

Thanks,
Bill
