I just bought a 192 industrial shortblock thinking I may be able to put it in an 801 172 with a thrown rod. What kind of problem am I going to have mating the 172 head to the 192. Should they not match up? As I understand a 192 is a 172 without sleeves. Also what about headgaskets? Should I seek a headgasket specifically for a 192? Any help, knowledge, advice or tips on this mating effort is appreciated. I got the newly rebuilt 192 shortblock for $150 but it has three stripped headbolt holes (helicoil? or tap?} Got the 801 for $500. If I can make the two match, I'll have a sweet deal. I eagerly await your usual professional advice. Thanks.

The head gasket for the 192 matches the bore on the block,,, thats the one you need. I think the 172 head will work just fine,, dont think theres any difference. HTH
