I have a Ford 4000 4Cyl Diesel. The crank shaft broke in two. When we took the engine apart we noticed that the crank has a gear on it. I looks like there might have been a balancer in the engine a one time. Does any one have any idea if the motor actually had a balancer or not? If it did and it was left out could this have contributed to the crank breaking?

I have a 971-d (104,000). Yes your tractor should have an engine balancer. In the early 1970's our balancer broke a tooth off and my dad took it out. We ran it that way for a couple of months, but anything over about 1700 rpm and it shook pretty bad. Dad finally spent the money, bought a new one and we put it back in. To help save the old tractor, I set my high idle,(NO LOAD) at 1950 rpm. The balancer does make a Big Difference in vibration. My tractor is quite smooth running with the balancer. Since your crank had the gear on it, Yes it had a balancer and someone took it out because it broke.

According to my book, at serial no. 102357 a balancer was used on all 172 cu in diesel engines. If your tractor is a 4000, it should have a balancer in it. Unless yours is a replacement early engine. There was some problem with breaking cranks on some of the diesels, but I don't know for sure if this had something to do with a balancer or not. If somebody removed the balancer at one time, my guess is this is at least part of the reason your crank broke.
