I have a pre-force Ford 3000, and I can't figure out what type of PTO it has. The PTO lever on the LH side controls the PTO regardless of the position of the gear lever or clutch. It acts like an 'Independent PTO', but apparently this wasn't an option on the 3000. I'd suspect that it's just a badly adjusted 'Live PTO' if it weren't for the fact that the PTO also operates in neutral, which I don't think would be the case (could somebody please confirm or deny this ?)

Thank you all for your replies.
I've now established that it's actually a 'Live PTO' - the problem was that the pins in the pedal linkage were so worn that excessive play prevented it working properly. I've replaced the pins and re-adjusted it, and it's now working exactly as it should.

Looking in my NH factory manuals for '65-'75 2000 thur 7000 I do not see an independent PTO avaliable for the 3000. They only show repair procedures for IPTO for 4000 and up.

Every PTO I've seen operates in netural if the clutch pedal is up (clutch engaged)

A tranny PTO gets it power from the INPUT of the transmission, so even in netural the PTO will function, if the clutch pedal is up, (clutch engaged)

A live PTO works the same except it gets its power from one of the clutch plates in the dual clutch, and requires the clutch pedal to be only half way up to operate (PTO disc engaged and trans drive disk disengaged)

An independent PTO gets it power directly from the engine without regard to anything else.

Is your clutch releasing OK (you have no problems putting the tranny in gear after you push the clutch down?) or possibly it is not releasing completely, and the gears tend to crunch when you engage the tranny, and so even when the clutch pedal is depressed, the PTO tends to drive (though if you were to load it up with an implement it probably would cease)

You don't say if you are observing the PTO shaft running with nothing connected, or if you discovered this with an implement such as a bush hog attached.

You say "Every PTO I've seen operates in neutral if the clutch pedal is up (clutch engaged)".
Doh ! - sorry about that, a 'senior moment' on my part - how else would you drive a sawbench...

Forgot to mention, have you checked your production codes to see what it is?

IPTO was available on 3000s. That sounds like what you have.
