2600 rear diff. or PTO snap ring?

Can anyone post or point me to a pic of an exploded view of the rear diff. and maybe PTO assy. for a 2600 (or equivilent)? I don't have a book, but need to get one. When draining the fluid from the rear Sat., a broken snap ring came out with the fluid. I got two pieces of it, enough to tell it was about 3" in diameter. The rest was ground up and stuck to the magnetic drain plug. Everything seems to work fine, but this has me guessing.

Sorry I don't have a pic available, but what you describe sounds like the snap ring from the backside of the pto retainer. Many times the retainer will crack and break off at the snap ring groove. The pto will still function but may tend to "walk" in and out.

That seems to be a likely suspect to me as well, as the ring looked about that size. I've hogged with it a great deal lately. If this is what has happened, does it need to be addressed right away to prevent something serious? A manual is great, but nothing beats experience. I appreciate any advice I can get here from those with more experience.

I have posted a pic of the pieces on the "parts and pcs" section. Titled "'76 2600 snap ring".
It's a bit blurry, but you can make out the shape and size.
Once again, thank you for the help.

I may have missed it, but I couldn't find your pic. Wouldn't be the first time I was "blind". If it were me I'd fix it soon, especially if I were using the PTO frequently. If it's set up the way I think it is, it's not that hard to pull the rear shaft assembly and replace the retainer and snap ring. I would also replace the bearing, wear sleeve and seal while I was at it.

Thanks Roger, I went back and could not find the pic either. I must have done something screwy when I posted it. I'll try it again. Looks like I'm about to get some more good tractor mechanic experience.

The pto setup is just as I thought on this tractor. To remove it, drain the rear end and hydraulic oil, then remove the four bolts attaching the pto retainer to the center housing and pull the shaft/retainer assembly out.

If you would like further information or assistance just send me an e-mail.

I see your pic is up now. Yep, it sure looks like the snap ring from the PTO...or half of it anyway! I was so busy at the shop today I didn't have a chance to verify how I believe this is assembled. I'll try to make it the first thing I look at in the morning, and post my findings for you when I get home in the evening.

If it makes it any easier, I've "un-hidden" my e-mail address so you can contact me directly if you have any further questions.
