Hey gang, recently bought a '53 NAA that had been converted to 12 volt using single wire GM alternator. The guy that did it cobbled up the wiring something fierce, so I decided to undo his mess.
In the process, I replaced the alternator he had installed as it was bad, and used an automotive version. I wired it according to the diagram I used on my old '50 Ford Woody a few years ago, which is trouble free.
My problem is this, it starts and runs just fine, but my ammeter shows way past 30 amps to the positive side when you rev it up, and...it won't shut off when I turn the key off. I remember having the same problem with my car, but don't remember how I fixed it...HELP!!

It appears that you are using a hot wire from your ignition to get the alternator to charge. When you shut the ignition off, currrent from the alternator backfeeds to the ignition, keeping the tractor running. You nee to install a diode to allow current to reach the alternator and not allow it to backfeed the ignition. If your alternator charges wide open all the time, the alternator's internal regulator may have failed.
