I have a 1966 Ford 2000, Model number 21022A, Production number 6F9B, which has started leaking power steering fluid out of the top of the steering column. My guess is that a seal in the column has blown. Is the steering column removable without disassembling the entire steering gear assembly? Or maybe I am all wet (with power steering fluid)...maybe the trouble is elsewhere. Can anyone help me??

I experienced the same fluid leak on my '58 841 recently and read that some seals can be replaced without a time-consuming tear down. Hopeful, I removed the steering wheel and found that the steering shaft was wiggling all around inside the column tube. I proceeded to remove the entire steering box and column from the tractor. When I detached the column from the power steering control valve it seemed that there were all sorts of seals and bearings missing. I started to feel unsure of how to properly rebuild the unit so I had my New Holland dealer rebuild it, replacing seals and bearings, adjusting sector gear backlash, etc. Seeing the rebuilt unit made me appreciate how messed up it was before.

Since I only know the last couple years of my tractor's history, I felt the extra expense of a complete rebuild was worth it. Your situation may be completely different.

-Just sharing my experience. Good luck.

Yes, these seals can be replaced without taking apart the entire column, ASSUMING that the problem is only with the seal itself (e.g. old age). I have seen sometimes where the bottom bearing in the box goes out, throwing the rest of the box and shaft out of alignment. This makes it near impossible for the seal to work properly.
