My Hyd. were working fine , and now they have slowed down to almost nothing. I'm refering to the 3 point lift , not a remote hyd. setup. I dont use the tractor very much , mostly during hunting season for food plots and all . It has an ext. mounted pump on the bell housing on the left side. Like I said it was working fine , but over the last six months or so they have been slowing down to what i have no which is when I crank the tractor and engage the lift it doesn't instantly start to raise , after about 30 seconds or so it begins to raise and does it at a slow rate wether it's at idle or half or full throttle. Just looking for some suggestions to see what it could be . I'm not real strong on my trouble shooting skills on hyd systems.

Thanks for everyone's help, Chris Holland 1966 3000 Ford Gas

The black knob speeds the lift up if screwed in slows it down if screwed out. But I doubt that's your problem if the lift was working fine before.

To check the lift fluid take out the octagonal bolt located back towards the axle about midway up the housing. It should be the fartherest one back and will be the only bolt there I think. It's about six inches from the rear axle and almost in line with it. With the lift arms up fill until the fluid comes out the hole. Don't mistakenly take out the slot headed screws that are around there as they hold hydraulic lines in place. Unless your extra lucky removing them usually means taking off the lift cover to replace the line. You check the transmission level the same way except the bolt is located about in the middle of and above the right footrest. These plugs should be the only boltheads you see. The rest are screws if my memory is correct. If the fluid looks like coffee and milk in either you need to change it. If you have to change either you should use NH 134 hydraulic fluid or equivalent.

The filler hole for the lift is the big plug located on the differential housing, transmission fill is at the gear shifters.

If that doesn't work prime the pump. Make sure the lever is in position control (up) and not draft control (down). If I got that backwards someone will let me know.

Does the tractor sit outside in the rain allt he time?

Water in the fluid.

Chris, the first thing you ought to do is check the fluid level with the lift arms all the way up, engine off. If the level is fine and the fluid is not milky or execssively dirty prime the pump.

You may have a flow control valve on that tractor located on the right side above the foot rest. Should be a black knob. If the knob is screwed out the lift slows down, if screwed in the lift speeds up.

Also make sure the tractor is in position control rather than draft control. That lever is on the right side sort of under the seat. It should be in the up position.

If the lift works fine after the pump is primed but loses prime after sitting a day or so you have an air leak. In that case my thinking is that either the pump or lift cover needs rebuilding.

There are two filters for that system both of which are inside the lift cover. You can only get to one of them unless you're houdini. If you pull the lift cover you might as well rebuild it b/c it's a pain to get on and off and it's not expensive. The pump can be professionally rebuilt for around $100-150.00.

Some of the more experienced members will know more but that's my $0.02.

Thanks for your reply's, have to say i do not recall seeing a dip-stick back there . Do I have to just pull a plug and check to see if fluid runs out or what? I beleive my lever under the right side of the seat is in the down position, has a small knob on the back of the same housing that screws in and out I beleive. Should I screw it in most or all of the way or what is best ?
